Do you need an ISBN to publish a book in the UK?

No, you don't need to buy an ISBN to publish on Amazon — KDP assigns a free ISBN for print and an ASIN for Kindle. You do need a registered ISBN to sell through UK bookshops, wholesalers and libraries, because the book trade is keyed on ISBNs.

So the real question isn't "do I need one", it's "what am I trying to do with my book, and which identifier gets me there?" Here is the plain-English version for the UK.

What an ISBN actually is (and what it isn't)

An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is the 13-digit code that identifies one specific edition of one specific book to the entire book trade. Two things trip authors up:

• An ISBN is not copyright, and it is not permission to publish. You own the copyright to your book the moment you write it, and you keep the rights to a self-published book whichever route you take. An ISBN doesn't grant or protect any rights — it's a catalogue number, not a legal status.
• An ISBN records who the publisher of record is. Whoever registers the ISBN is listed as the publisher against that book in the trade databases. This is the detail that makes which ISBN you use matter more than whether you have one.

Do you need one? It depends on where you want your book

So a book that only ever lives on Amazon can be published with zero ISBN spend. A book you want discoverable and orderable across the UK book trade needs a proper, registered ISBN — and ideally one that lists you (or your publisher) rather than Amazon.

The free-KDP-ISBN trade-off (read before you tick the box)

When you publish a print book through Amazon KDP you're offered a free KDP ISBN. It's genuinely free and it works — but there are two catches:

• It lists Amazon as the publisher of record, not you. That's fine for many authors; it's a dealbreaker if you want to look like an independent press in the trade databases.
• You can't reuse it anywhere else. A free KDP ISBN is tied to Amazon — you can't take that same identifier to IngramSpark, a bookshop, or another platform. To go wide later, you'd need a fresh ISBN, which can mean re-listing the book.

For Kindle ebooks the equivalent is an ASIN — Amazon's own code. It's assigned automatically, it's not a real ISBN, and it isn't recognised outside Amazon. Perfectly fine for Kindle; no use to a library.

What a UK ISBN costs if you buy your own

In the UK, ISBNs are issued by the Nielsen ISBN Store (the UK's designated ISBN agency). As of August 2026 the list prices are:

• 1 ISBN — £89
• 10 ISBNs — £164 (about £16 each)
• 100 ISBNs — £369 (about £3.69 each)

Single ISBNs are deliberately poor value — the 10-pack costs only £75 more than one, which is why anyone planning more than a single edition buys a block. Registering with Nielsen is also what pushes your book's metadata out to Gardners, the wholesalers and library systems.

One book, several formats — one ISBN each

The part most first-time authors miss: every distinct format of your book needs its own ISBN. A paperback, a hardback and an ebook of the same title are three separate editions in the trade's eyes, so a book you want in all three formats needs three ISBNs (the Kindle version can lean on its ASIN instead if it's Amazon-only). It's not a reason to panic — it's a reason to buy a block rather than singles, and to decide your formats before you register anything.
